Chapter Sixteen

My intuition was on point regarding Ben’s desire to stay at the hotel versus relocating to Evander’s. It’s incredible how quickly the prospect of sex changes a person’s outlook. The same person who hassled me about the cost of staying downtown all of a sudden has turned into money isn’t something we can take with us, who cares how much it costs. I don’t blame him one bit, I just find it entertaining.

I kept most of my stuff packed away when we arrived, so it doesn’t take long to pack a bag to take to Evander’s. I’m not saying I’m super excited about staying in the same house as Evander, but I am packed, in the car, and heading to his place before ten in the morning. Yes, that is a big deal, thanks for asking.

I arrive and don’t like what I don’t see, and that’s their car in the driveway. They better not have taken off. I’m just saying I wouldn’t want me pissed at me. I make my way to the front door and try to go in, but it’s locked. I ring the bell and hope for the best. It doesn’t take long for me to hear the click-clack of the lock as it’s disengaged. When the door opens, my heart hits the porch floor, and my temper hits the rafters.

“Where is he?” I demand from Owen.

“Not here. Are you coming in?”

I step inside. “Tell me he just went to the store.”

“He had business to attend to and thought it best if he wasn’t here to distract you while you review the journals.”

“Does he think I’m twelve or something? I can multitask.”

Owen laughs. “I’m sure you believe that. Why don’t you take your bag upstairs, second door on the left, and then meet me in the library. Would you like some coffee?”

“Fuck yes.”

Owen nods and then goes toward the kitchen, and I head up the stairs. I set the suitcase inside the room and make my way down to the library.

Owen enters with two cups of coffee. “I hope it doesn’t bother you that you can’t take the journals with you.”

“Not going to lie, it’d bother me less if Evander were here instead of you.”

“Who are you trying to kid? You can say all you want that you’re a multitasker, but you wouldn’t get any reading done if he were here. You’d have to pry your eyes away from him, and you wouldn’t.”

“He’d like to think so. I still don’t understand why you can’t just tell me the history.”

“It’s not like I don’t have anything else to do.”

“Exactly.”

Owen rolls his eyes and then takes a sip of coffee.

“I don’t see a reason to get cute about this, so I think I’ll read them in order. Unless there’s an already established protocol or something.”

“I think in order is best, top shelf left to the bottom shelf right. You should finish before the end of the year.”

“Funny.”

Owen shrugs, sits at the desk, and begins clicking away on the computer keyboard.
